Emigrantes del continente, toneladas de majestuosidad, criaturas corcovadas de ojos profundos y especie aún en peligro de extinción. Son solo algunas de las características del bóvido salvaje que se encuentra donde el cielo se funde con la tierra, en una abrazo cálido y efímero. El gigante encorvado, es una representación tangible de resiliencia, de supervivencia y que, en esta muestra, se contextualiza en las praderas y la reserva de la biósfera de Janos. Emigrants from the continent, tons of majesty, hunched creatures with deep eyes and a species still in danger of extinction. These are just some of the characteristics of the wild bovid that is found where the sky merges with the earth, in a warm and ephemeral embrace. The hunched giant is a tangible representation of resilience, of survival and that, in this exhibition, is contextualized in the prairies and the Janos biosphere reserve.

Zona de Bisontes, es una muestra compuesta de historias de supervivencia que, a través de imágenes fijas, nos invitan a repensar el derecho a existir y las formas posibles de ejercerlo. Es una invitación a explorar la estética de lo silenciado, del entorno poco accesible y de la historia del bisonte. Bison Zone is an exhibition composed of survival stories that, through still images, invite us to rethink the right to exist and the possible ways to exercise it. It is an invitation to explore the aesthetics of the silenced, the inaccessible environment and the history of the bison.

Inspirado en su propia naturaleza y vocación como médico, en su herencia e historia familiar, el fotógrafo logra capturar su intimidad, su hábitat. Su enfoque de eticidad y sujeto político, se contrapone al esquema de aquellos que ven a los animales como especies inferiores, de aquellos que aplauden rituales de sacrificio y matanzas justificadas con supuestas razones de índole estética o económica. Inspired by his own nature and vocation as a doctor, by his heritage and family history, the photographer manages to capture its intimacy, its habitat. Its approach to ethics and political subject is opposed to the scheme of those who see animals as inferior species, of those who applaud rituals of sacrifice and killings justified with supposed aesthetic or economic reasons.

Cuauhtémoc Piña, the hunter of images, prints and stories, shares through his powerful narrative, a vision where his sensitivity, his deep ontological understanding, his concern for promoting the right to exist and promotes harmonious coexistence between nature and us can be appreciated. A lo largo de los siglos, la región ha sido testigo de importantes acontecimientos, desde las guerras apaches hasta la Revolución mexicana, desempeñando un papel importante en la historia de México. Actualmente, sigue siendo un lugar de gran relevancia cultural y patrimonial. Over the centuries, the region has witnessed important events, from the Apache Wars to the Mexican Revolution, playing an important role in Mexican history. Currently, it continues to be a place of great cultural and heritage relevance.

Recorrer el territorio, fundirse en sus paisajes y confundirse entre sus pobladores, es reencontrarse con ese inmenso patrimonio que nos conecta con nuestro origen y nos impulsa al futuro, como hilo conductor de nuestra historia. To explore the territory, to merge into its landscapes and to blend in with its inhabitants, is to rediscover that immense heritage that connects us with our origin and propels us to the future, as the guiding thread of our history.

Desde el año 2013 tuve oportunidad de conocer la reserva y durante los siguientes diez años, emprendí la aventura de registrar fotográficamente no solamente estos magníficos ejemplares, sino la vastedad de la llanura y su espléndida belleza de Janos. Since 2013 I had the opportunity to get to know the reserve and for the next ten years, I undertook the adventure of photographically recording not only these magnificent specimens, but also the vastness of the plain and its splendid beauty of Janos.

Las imágenes aquí presentadas, son el resultado de esa pasión y espero tengan un gran valor tanto en términos de conservación de la biodiversidad como de la preservación de la cultura chihuahuense. The images presented here are the result of that passion and I hope they have great value both in terms of conservation of biodiversity and the preservation of Chihuahuan culture.

A una distancia de ochenta metros, dejé la seguridad de mi jeep y comencé lentamente a caminar de manera tangencial hacia cerca de cuarenta ejemplares. At a distance of eighty meters, I left the safety of my jeep and slowly began walking tangentially toward about forty specimens.

Los machos vigilantes, al sentir mi presencia, se situaron entre mi humanidad y el resto de la manada, formando una barrera infranqueable. Protegido del sol con mi sombrero de ala ancha, llevaba mi cámara y un endeble trípode. Al acercarme, escuché los bufidos y las pisadas de los machos, que se inquietaban con mi presencia, por lo que detuve el paso y lentamente hice movimientos como si buscara un objeto en el suelo, incluso me puse en cuclillas, esperando así que se calmaran. The vigilant males, sensing my presence, placed themselves between my humanity and the rest of the pack, forming an insurmountable barrier. Protected from the sun with my wide-brimmed hat, I carried my camera and a flimsy tripod. As I approached, I heard the snorts and footsteps of the males, who were worried about my presence, so I stopped my step and slowly made movements as if I were looking for an object on the ground, I even squatted down, waiting for them to calm down.

Consciente de que enfrentaba seres indómitos de casi dos metros de altura, con un peso cercano a una tonelada cada uno, mis sentidos se aguzaron al percatarme de mi insignificancia frente a tan poderosas bestias situadas a menos de cuarenta metros de distancia. Aware that I was facing untamed beings almost two meters high, weighing close to a ton each, my senses were sharpened as I realized my insignificance in the face of such powerful beasts located less than forty meters away.

Las pisadas firmes disminuyeron al igual que sus bufidos y movimientos de sus colas, lo que me dio ánimo para levantarme y comenzar de nuevo a acercarme muy lentamente. Sentía el fuerte latido de mi corazón y mi respiración agitada por la emoción, pero no dejé de observar la actitud de tan magníficos ejemplares, quienes al sentir mi proximidad mostraron nuevamente su inquietud con bufidos, pisadas y movimientos de sus colas. The firm footsteps diminished as did their snorting and wagging of their tails, which gave me the courage to get up and start approaching again very slowly. I felt the strong beating of my heart and my breathing agitated by emotion, but I did not stop observing the attitude of such magnificent specimens, who upon sensing my proximity showed their concern again with snorts, footsteps and movements of their tails.

De nuevo repetí la maniobra y me di cuenta de que se calmaban. Fue en este instante cuando tuve la convicción de haber establecido una especie de comunicación y que ellos mismos podrían indicarme hasta dónde podría acercarme de manera segura. Siguiendo esta técnica, pude acercarme a una distancia de 15 metros. Uno de los machos lentamente se acercó. Me quedé muy quieto, apenas me movía como en cámara lenta para montar mi equipo en el trípode y tratar de acercarme a un arbusto para sentirme protegido. El animal pasó a pocos metros, como sin darme importancia, se detuvo, volteó hacia mi durante unos minutos y finalmente, de manera lenta, regresó a la manada. I repeated the maneuver again and noticed that they calmed down. It was at this moment when I was convinced that I had established some kind of communication and that they themselves could tell me how far I could safely approach them. Following this technique, I was able to get closer to a distance of 15 meters. One of the males slowly approached. I stayed very still, barely moving as if in slow motion to mount my equipment on the tripod and try to get close to a bush to feel protected. The animal passed a few meters away, as if without paying attention, stopped, turned towards me for a few minutes and finally, slowly, returned to the herd.

Me recorrió una fuerte sensación mezcla de júbilo, orgullo y humildad. Había logrado no solo acercarme a la manada, sino ponerme en comunión con tan poderosos especímenes, con mis miedos más internos y con la inmensidad de la llanura que reflejaba la totalidad de la naturaleza. A strong feeling of joy, pride and humility ran through me. I had managed not only to get closer to the herd, but to put myself in communion with such powerful specimens, with my innermost fears and with the immensity of the plain that reflected the totality of nature.

En el incendio de la tarde, dos lunas,
una menguante y una creciente
anuncian el latido del bisonte
en la entraña de la pradera,
el cazador de imágenes sigiloso
entre la admiración y los pastizales
verdes y naranjos arrebolados
deambula al acecho, a la contemplación
del venerado animal, quien al percibir
la presencia del hombre yergue
el imponente marrón de su joroba,
a medida que su sombra se desplaza
acariciando la planicie en sincronía
con el vuelo del párpado sobre su pupila,
la lente ocular del bisonte americano
caza la imagen del fotógrafo,
allí, mediados por la llanura y el cielo,
en la línea anubarrada del horizonte,
bajo la lluvia espesa de pestañas:
el hombre y la bestia,
el observador, observado,
capturado en el cráter brillante
y húmedo del habitante de las praderas:
la luz del sol el agente de revelado,
el bisonte en la cámara, el fotógrafo

a waning and a waxing
announce the heartbeat of the bison
in the bowels of the prairie,
the hunter of stealthy images
between admiration and the grasslands
green and flushed orange trees
wanders on the lookout, contemplating
the venerated animal, who upon perceiving
the presence of man raises
the imposing brown of its hump,
as its shadow moves
caressing the plain in synchrony
with the flight of the eyelid over its pupil,
the ocular lens of the American bison
hunts the photographer's image,
there, mediated by the plain and the sky,
on the cloudy line of the horizon,
under the thick rain of eyelashes:
the man and the beast,
the observer, observed,
captured in the crater bright
and humid of the inhabitant of the prairies:
sunlight the developing agent,
the bison in the camera, the photographer
in the living memory of Janos.

Titulado como médico cirujano y partero, como médico familiar y como maestro en educación. A partir de 2006, ha asistido a múltiples cursos, talleres, diplomados y seminarios relativos a la fotografía, en la Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez, en el Instituto de Fotografía de Nueva York, en el Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez, en el Museo de Arqueología del Chamizal, y en el Centro Fotográfico Fuji Film de México, entre otros. He holds degrees as surgeon and midwife, as family doctor and as master in education. Beginning in 2006, he has attended multiple courses, workshops and seminars related to photography, at the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez, at the New York Institute of Photography, at the Ciudad Juárez Museum of Art, at the Chamizal Archeology Museum, and at the Fuji Film Photography Center in Mexico, among others.

Su visión crítica ha sido reconocida con diversos premios y distinciones en concursos de fotografía urbana, por su capacidad para retratar el entorno urbano juarense y los cambios sociales contemporáneos. His critical vision has been recognized with various awards and distinctions in urban photography contests, for his ability to portray the urban environment of Juárez and contemporary social changes.

La reserva de la biósfera de Janos, establecida mediante Decreto Presidencial por Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa, alberga importantes especies de plantas vasculares, endémicas o en alguna categoría de protección, como el nogal cimarrón, especie amenazada y la biznaga cabeza de viejo o pitaya, especie amenazada y endémica a la región. The Janos Biosphere Reserve, established by Presidential Decree by Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa, is home to important species of vascular plants, endemic or in some category of protection, such as the bighorn walnut, an endangered species, and the biznaga cabeza de viejo(old man's head biznaga) or pitaya, a threatened species endemic to the region.

El Plan Nacional de Desarrollo 2007-2012 estableció como uno de sus objetivos la conservación de los ecosistemas del país. Para ello, impulsó estrategias como la creación de nuevas áreas naturales protegidas y otras formas de preservación de la biodiversidad. The National Development Plan 2007-2012 established the conservation of the country's ecosystems as one of its objectives. To this end, it promoted strategies such as the creation of new protected natural areas and other forms of biodiversity preservation.

Las Reservas de la Biósfera se constituyen en áreas biogeográficas relevantes a nivel nacional, representativas de uno o más ecosistemas no alterados significativamente por la acción del ser humano o que requieren ser preservados o restaurados, en los cuales habitan especies representativas de la biodiversidad nacional, incluyendo las consideradas endémicas, amenazadas o en peligro de extinción. Biosphere Reserves are constituted by relevant biogeographic areas at the national level, representative of one or more ecosystems not significantly altered by human action or that require preservation or restoration, in which species representative of the national biodiversity live, including those considered endemic, threatened or in danger of extinction.
